My Top 13 Horror-Comedies

As a horror fan, I can tell you that my all-time favorite movie is a good horror-comedy. I’ve given up on being scared for the last half decade, so I figured if I’m not screaming in terror, I might as well be screaming with laughter. Here are my top picks for horror-comedies. Tell me which ones you love too!

13. Blood Car

Oh, what I would give to have this car! Sure, the whole blood-fueled car is sort of the opposite for what the hippie guy was going for, but this movie secretly fulfills every person’s desire to kill whoever they wish to fuel their car. Also, there’s a pretty hilarious showdown between meat eaters and vegetarians, which involves My Girl’s Anna Chlumsky (yes she’s still alive and working).

12. Wild Zero

I’m not a huge fan of J-Horror, but Wild Zero not only is perfect for the zombie fan, but also for the punk rock crowd. Besides, what horror movie comes along with a drinking game on the DVD? None that I’m aware of, which is just another reason to love this movie. There’s nothing better than rocking out to the sounds of Guitar Wolf while watching a zombie invasion go down. And people thought punk rockers have no sense of humor…

11. Bubba Ho-Tep

You can’t even read the synopsis about this movie without imagining how great is! Elvis and a mummy encounter? That’s beautiful! Of course, once you actually watch it you’re so giddy with excitement and scared out of your pants that you can’t help but love it. Who would’ve though the man behind Phantasm was such a funny guy? Besides, it’s not like horror fans need another reason to love Bruce Campbell.

10. The Frighteners

This movie doesn’t get the attention it deserves! Peter Jackson, who we all know can do horror, takes another shot at horror-comedy with this flick. Michael J. Fox teams up with actors Jake Busey and horror icon Jeffrey Combs to make one of my all-time favorite movies. This movie is proof that you don’t have to rely on gore, bad language and violence to make a scary-ass, hilarious and enjoyable movie.

9. Black Sheep

We all know that New Zealanders (or Kiwis) are great horror-comedies filmmakers (check out a certain movie further on the list), so you toss in a few deranged sheep-turned-zombies and you’re good to go! Sure, this movie is about as ridiculous as they come, but it’s still hilarious and the story flows nicely. Besides, this more than likely started a string of animal-turned-zombie movies, but remember that this is by far the best. Screw Mulberry Street…

8. Fido

I’m not a huge fan of ‘50s TV, but when you mix “Leave it to Beaver” with a zombie movie, it somehow works for me. Not only do those old-school mannerisms and lifestyle characteristics make for an interesting movie 50 years later, but you add in a few flesheaters and it makes for a very original movie. Besides having a zombie for a pet/personal servant, I couldn’t stop drooling over those dresses the main characters wore!

7. Feast

Most horror movies that take place in a little populated hick town are usually unintentionally funny. However, when Feast came around, that all changed. The deserted setting only makes the monster invasion more interesting after you throw in a few crazy characters. My favorite is none other than Henry Rollins, the roughest and toughest dude around, playing a big ‘mo in pink sweatpants. Gays, hardcore punk and horror? Talk about my dream come true!

6. My Name is Bruce

In addition to Man with the Screaming Brain (which is also a great movie), you know when horror icon Bruce Campbell steps behind AND in front of the camera that good things will happen. With My Name is Bruce, he takes this one step further by playing no one other than himself, proving his fans with humor and horror alike. You know what’s scarier than the protector of bean curd? Those Hawaiian shirts he wears. See? Perfection.

5. Dead & Breakfast

I ended up buying this movie on a whim at Best Buy back in the day because it said it was “The U.S.’ answer to Shaun of the Dead.” I think this is mostly true. With a small budget and all things indie attached, you sometimes expect the worst when it comes to effects and actors, but this movie proves to be the exact opposite. Besides, with a wise-cracking country singer and cameo from David Carradine, you can’t go wrong.

4. Army of Darkness

Everyone knows that when Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell get together that it’s magical. Army of Darkness is not only right in line with this, but it surpasses everything they’ve done before. It is snort-inducing funny, has great special effects and genuinely scary and/or bizarre moments. When it comes to one-liners, Ash is king, baby! Oh, and impressing the ladies (yes, I think he’s dreamy).

3. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

Behind the Mask has something for everyone. With its great kills, hilarious sight and sound gags, a fantastic script and excellent twists and turns, this movie makes a perfect horror flick. Starting out as a Spinal Tap-esque mockumentary (focusing on a serial killer in-training versus a metal band) and turning into a legitimate horror film, this movie leaves you on the edge of your seat and in stitches.

2. Dead Alive

Not only is Dead Alive the “goriest movie ever made”, but it’s also one of the funniest. In fact, one of the film’s taglines is “You’ll laugh yourself sick”, which is right on the money. There are so many disgusting moments in this film (especially towards the end) that you honestly have no idea what else to do except to laugh…or puke. Besides, the one-liners throughout the film are some the best in cinema history.

1. Shaun of the Dead

This movie is a horror fan’s dream. It’s funny, it has great scares and it’s made by horror fans. There’s rarely a scene that goes by that isn’t paying homage to some other horror flick. With the likes of Romero’s Dead series, The Evil Dead, Lucio Fulci’s Zombie and 28 Days Later, every horror buff is sure to laugh at how beautifully each reference is included in Shaun of the Dead in addition to the film’s own humor.
