He's not a "movie dog from the 90s" at all. In the Disney movie, which I just rewatched two days ago, Old Yeller gets rabies from a wolf. The family's cow comes down with rabies, and while they are burning her corpse, a rabid wolf attacks them. Old Yeller saves them and kills the wolf, but Ma insists they pen Yeller up to be sure he hasn't contracted the disease. Sadly, he had, and Travis has to shoot him.
